About the Russian North from the Horse's Mouth

On Saturday, August 18, the Moscow Tsaritsyno (Museum-Reserve) will host a geography holiday organized by the Russian Geographical Society. This holiday will close the summer educational program of the Society in Moscow parks. Guests of the Russian Geographical Society Day will enjoy exciting lectures, master classes, geographical games and much more.

Professor of the Department of Ethnology of Lomonosov Moscow State University, head of the North Russian ethnographic expedition of MSU, Candidate of historical sciences Andrey Tutorsky will give a lecture on "Living History of the Russian North". The researcher will speak about the major milestones in the history of the Russian North and why this region has become a so-called reserve of antiquity. The audience will learn the "national Orthodoxy" traditions including worshiping of holy places and memorial crosses, conversations with animals, plants and rivers.

Traveler, ethnographer, wildlife photographer Elena Mashkova will speak about Akhal-Teke horses, a horse breed from Turkmenistan, originating back to 5,000 years ago.  It was bred by representatives of ancient civilizations, who lived on the lands of modern Turkmenistan. Akhal-Teke horses are "ancestors" of many breeds – English racehorse, Arabic and others.

In addition, the guests of the geography holiday will meet with Kirill Kuznetsov, the head of the Moscow lecture hall of the Russian Geographical society. The lecturer will get children and adults acquainted with the history and modern activities of the Russian Geographical Society, expeditions and educational projects of the Society.

No less interesting will be practical classes, which will be popular with young visitors of Tsaritsyno. At the “One day in the Arctic” master class, the guests will learn how and why polar researchers study ices of the Arctic Ocean, will make weather forecasts by using the Atlas of clouds and will identify birds. And at the lesson "The Urals are mountains of gems" they will get acquainted with the history of the semi-precious area of Russia and will take part in a mineralogical workshop.

Works by finalists of the Most Beautiful Country photo contest will be exhibited at the event. Thus, the visitors will see unique photographs of wild animals, underwater world, natural and cultural attractions of Russia.
