The Russian Geographical Society announces the start of All-Russian contest for participation in the volunteer camp « Commander Islands – 2017». The expedition will take place from the 31st of July to the 20th of September on the territory of Commander Reserve. The boys aged from 18 to 30 years possessing building skills are invited.
Commander Islands is archipelago of four islands, located in the south-west of the Bering Sea and the Pacific Ocean. One of the most inaccessible places in Russia. The islands are named after the seaman who discovered them in 1741, the Commander Vitus Bering. The Commander's natural biosphere reserve named after S.V. Marakova was founded there in 1993. That was the biggest sea reserve of Russia: the area of its protected marine area is more than 3 million hectares.
Commander is famous for its natural resources - green hills, sand dunes, open spaces covered with tundra carpet, stormy waters of the Pacific and the Bering Sea, fountains of whales, thousands of bird markets and huge rookeries of fur seals and sea lions.
Within the frames of the expedition of the Russian Geographical Society the volunteers can become the part of the team: to help the PA staff in the arrangement of hiking trails, to take part in the accounting of marine mammals, to work in scientific laboratories. The cultural program includes going out to the sea to humpback whales, killer whales and dolphins, and the Excursions to the islands of Toporkov and Ariy Kamen as well.
