In the summer of 2018, members of the youth club of the Russian Geographical Society "Korabely  Prionezhje" (the Vologda region, Vytegorsky district) will start for a water expedition to the Solovetsky Islands. The project will be implemented with the grant support of the Russian Geographical Society.

Participants in the expedition will cover a distance from Vytegra to the Solovetsky Islands in a self-made boat. The route will go along the eastern coast of Onega Lake, along the White Sea-Baltic Canal and along the White Sea. The program of the journey comprises a lot of various lectures and workshops. Young people will learn how to operate vessels, fill in travel journals, and will learn the regulations for ensuring safety.

"This expedition of the Russian Geographical Society is an annual event, but this year we have one of the most ambitious routes," says Nadezhda Maksutova, head of the Vologda regional branch of the Russian Geographical Society. "Children will learn the history of the development of Onega Lake, visit places where the Onega flotilla fought, as well as some underwater sights. There are settlements on the White Sea-Baltic Canal that are considered historical monuments, for example, the village of Nadvoitsy on the route. The children will also find interesting to visit the first gold mine in Russia, gold from which came to the Solovetsky Islands, and the Solovetsky Monastery, in its turn, was engaged in coinage. "

Before the expedition, the young men and women will take part in a shift at the children's educational center "Korabely Prionezhje". They will study the route to the Solovetsky Islands in detail to be prepared for their journey.
