Geographical graffiti: there has appeared the portrait of Miklouho-Maclay in the center of Moscow

The big portrait of the great Russian explorer and anthropologist Nikolay Miklouho-Maclay decorates the house on Slavyanskaya Square, 4/2 now.

That has been the second thematic graffiti of the Russian Geographical Society already. The first one appeared in Arbat in October (Arbat street, 16/2, bld. 3). The image of snowy owl from the Wrangel Island was placed there. The author of the picture, on the basis of which an art object had been created, is the Chairman of the Jury of the All-Russian photo competition «The Most Beautiful Country» Sergey Gorshkov.

«Graffiti – is the perfect idea in order to get the youth interested, to remind them of the great Russian scientist, - the descendant of the explorer and the full namesake of his ancestor noted. – Nikolay Nikolaevich Miklouho-Maclay was an outstanding person, he fought for the rights of people, which are still being violating in many countries. The Russian Geographical Society drew attention to the activities of the explorer and has done a lot in order to restore memory of him. Besides the graffiti, there had been fixed a golden medal depicting Miklouho-Maclay on the building of the Headquarters of the Society.

Nikolay Miklouho-Maclay was born the 17th of July of 1846 in the Yazikovo-Rozhdestveno village of the Novgorod province. He was studying medicine, zoology, was taking part in various scientific expeditions during his study in the University of Jena. The scientist presented to the Imperial Russian Geographical Society the plan of expedition to the Pacific islands for zoological and anthropological studies. In 1869 the explorer presented to theImperial Russian Geographical Society a plan of expedition to thePacific Islands for zoological and anthropological research. His initiative was supported by the Council of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society. The expeditions to Oceania, which made Miklouho-Maclay a world-famous anthropologist, began in 1870 with swimming on the corvette «Vityaz» and went on till the year of 1887. The explorer is famous for his anthropological researches in New Guinea, where the Astrolabe Beach Bay is named after Miklouho-Maclay – the first European, set foot on this land. The traveler was living with aborigines, having become a friend and teacher for them. He defended the interests of the entire population of New Guinea to the governments of the European countries, preventing the exploitation and extermination of the natives.

Three more street art objects based on the All-Russian photo competition «The most beautiful country» will decorate Moscow in the nearest future. A fox and walrus will make their company to the polar owl from Arbat. Besides that, the photo work «A Little Varg», the author of which is Alexander Romanov, - the winner of «The peoples of Russia» nomination of the First photo contest of the Russian Geographical Society, - will be placed on the wall as well.
