The international steppe forum of the Russian Geographical Society started in Orenburg yesterday, September 10. This forum is an important event for modern science; During 4 days, scientists from all over Russia and several foreign countries will discuss the most relevant topics related to the state of the steppe: land use, monitoring of ecosystems, environmental protection, protection of flora and fauna.

This year, the question of preserving the steppe zone unique heritage is in the focus of special attention. The forum is held on the eve of an important date in the history of the steppes, the 70th anniversary of the publication of the state "plan for the transformation of nature", created by prominent biologists, agronomists, and geneticists. According to this plan, the problem of drought and, consequently, increased yields in dry regions should be addressed through the establishment of reclamation and planting systems for forest protection. Despite the fact that in the fifties the implementation of the plan was suspended, it is not forgotten; it is still interesting to scientists and causes professional disputes. Thus, within the framework of the forum a scientific discussion between representatives of opposite views on the problem of implementation of the plan of nature transformation will be held.

Among the participants of the Forum there are Vice-President of Russian Geographical Society, academician Chibilyov, academician Bolshakov, doctor of agricultural sciences, academician Kulik and others.
