Five days are left until submissions to the Russian Geographical Society Award 2018 will close. In the meantime, we continue to recall the winners of the previous years’ contests.

The Award of the Russian Geographical Society honors the most outstanding achievements made in geography, ecology, preservation and promotion of the natural, historical and cultural heritage of Russia. It occurs once every two years and has an international status. It was first held in 2014.

Tatarstan is a unique region of Russia, a place where Western and Eastern cultures meet. This Republic is rich in amazing places that attract tourists from all over the world. However, the opportunity to know and experience the beauty of these places is not given to everyone; it is also difficult to have people with visual defects. In 2016, the problem of blind and visually impaired problem was solved by the project of the republican special library "Tatarstan at the fingertips".

As part this project, different books for blind and visually impaired people were published in Russian and Tatar. Specialized publications with Braille tactile writing system tell the history, geography and culture of Tatarstan.

In total, 27 specialized publications were published during the project. Among them there is a geographical guidebook, books about the capital of Tatarstan and maps of the main attractions in the republic: the Kazan Kremlin, the Bulgarian settlement, Sviyazhsk Island, Zilantov Holy Dormition monastery and other cultural sites. Two textbooks on geography and local history of Tatarstan appeared on the shelves of school libraries.

In 2016, the project "Tatarstan at your fingertips "was awarded the RGS Award in the category of "Public recognition”.

Today, specialized publications continue under the auspices of the Republican Specialized Library for the blind and visually impaired: among the latest books that were published there is "Butterflies of the Nizhnyaya Kama national park.

Thanks to this project, knowledge about the unique objects of Tatarstan is available to all who are interested in nature, geography and culture of this amazing region.
