The 31st of March the Russian Geographical Society opens the year of geographical cinema with the 1st series showing of the documentary film «The war on the cold islands. The Hogland Island».

A two-part film, shot with the support of the Russian Geographical Society, tell us of the complicated fate of small islands, located on the approaches to Leningrad.  During the period of the Second World War the Hogland Island turned out to be at the forefront of the battle for the Baltic Sea, and became a place of bloody battles, the funnels are still reminding of them, as well as ramified systems of trenches, and hundreds of meters of barbed wire. The first series of the film is dedicated to the Soviet evacuation of Tallinn and to the destiny of its heroes: in the end of August, 1941, the island saved thousands of lives during the tragic evacuation of the naval base in Tallinn.

The meeting with the authors of the film expects the guests of the event, as well as the meeting with the participants of the Hogland expedition, who will tell them about the scientific research, life and work on the islands.

The project of the Russian Geographical Society «Complex expedition «Hogland», having been executed since the year of 2013, is aimed at the scale research in the sphere of geography, geology, biology and historic and cultural heritage of 14 outer islands of the Gulf of Finland.

There will be organized environmental watch on the islands in the year of 2016. During the month the «Hogland» team and the volunteers, selected during the all-Russian contest, will be eliminating the consequences of anthropogenic impact on the natural systems of a number of islands, will be clearing them from the results of economic activity, will be disassembling  forest debris, creating the risk of fire, will be reclaiming soil and restoring  historic lighthouses.

The guys will have no easy, a real men's work, and the life in the field camp in total isolation from civilization, in the harsh and fabulously beautiful islands. All-Russian volunteer contest for participation in the environmental watch of the Complex expedition «Hogland» is being held from the 4th of March till the 8th of April on the website: volunteer.rgo.ru.

Acquaintance of the audience with the film «The war on the cold islands. The Hogland Island» the Russian Geographical Society gives start to the series of geographic screenings across the country. The outer islands of the Gulf of Finland at various times belonged to Sweden, Finland and Russia, such memorable facts and events as the legendary «route from the Vikings to the Greeks», a «window to Europe» of Peter the Great, Tallinn transition, the «blockade ring» of Leningrad, are connected with them. Here took place the global measurement of the meridian arc and the first practical SOS signal was transmitted, maintained the labyrinths of the Stone Age, petroglyphs, traces of Viking settlements, etc.

To gather the disparate data to find new facts and tell people about them - the main goal of the «Hogland» command.
