Start of the Arctic Days in Moscow

The Arctic Days to take place in Moscow on November 20-22, 2014. Scientific conference "The Open Arctic", photo exhibition "The Arctic" (featuring famous arctic photographers), the III International Festival of Nonfiction films "The Arctic" - these events will be held within the framework of the festival.

The event is organized by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, with the support of the Russian Geographical Society, the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, Government of Moscow, Lomonosov Moscow State University, the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The slogan of the festival: "The Arctic - the energy of the future!".

As noted by Minister of Natural Resources Sergei Donskoi, the forum will be of interest to everyone appreciating the unusual world of the most northern part of the planet.

The schedule of the Arctic Days is rich and diverse. On November 20 - 21 in RAS Central House of Scientists ‘The Open Arctic’ scientific conference will take place. It will be the key event of the forum.

Plenary sessions and roundtables will be attended by Deputy Prime Minister of Russia A.G. Khloponin, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, S.E. Donskoy, President of the Russian Academy of Science, academician V.E. Fortov, Head of Lomonosov Moscow State University, academician V.A. Sadovnichii, employees of leading Russian scientific institutes, heads of companies JSC "NK Rosneft","Gazprom Neft", OJSC "MMC Norilsk Nickel", the governors of the Arctic regions, international experts.

The participants of the conference will discuss issues of comprehensive research and study of the Arctic, its cultural heritage, the prospects of geological study and exploration of the Arctic zone, environmental management, sustainable development of the region.

In the evening of November 20, at 18:30, presentation of photo exhibition «The Arctic» will take place in the Multimedia Art Museum. The exhibition will show the modern life and the nature of the polar zone. It will run until December 14, 2014. Some works will be displayed in the pedestrian zone of Gogolevsky Boulevard.

The next day, November 21, the Central House of Scientists RAS will host the opening ceremony of the III International Festival of Nonfiction Films «The Arctic». The participants of the Festival will submit documentaries and animated films about the Arctic for the competition.

The awards will be presented at the closing ceremony of the forum at 4:30 p.m. on November 22.

- "The Arctic Days in Moscow" will not be organized for form's sake. It will be effective and will lead to actions, - said deputy chairman of the Russian Geographical Society’s Environmental Commission, deputy director of the Institute of Geography RAS Arkady Tishkov. - We hope that many initiatives in research and protection of nature in the region will be supported.
