Last year during the study of marine fauna and flora of the coastal zone of the Kuril Islands the scientists discovered three species of marine invertebrates, which had not been known before. This year the colonial ascidia Distaplia matua was described as a new species, and two other representatives of marine invertebrates - actinium and alcyonarium the scientists still have to describe.

The 26th of July of 2017 the Expeditionary Group of the Russian Geographical Society, the representatives of the Expedition Center of the Ministry of Defense, Moscow State University, Sakhalin regional branch and Kamchatka regional branch of the Russian Geographical Society went again to the island of Matua.

Comprehensive work on studying the island of Matua in the Kuril chain has been executed by the Russian Geographical Society jointly with the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation from the year of 2016. The specialists carried out more than 1000 laboratory studies on physico-chemical and biological indicators, there were made more than 200 measurements of the relief and the external environment . There were also carried out radiation and chemical reconnaissance, there were inspected fortifications of the island and more than 100 historical sites. The divers carried out work on hydrographic exploration of the bays and bays of the island of Matua.

The new expedition of 2017 will be aimed at studying the species composition of the offshore coasts of the Kuril Islands, because of the inaccessibility of which most animals are still unexplored. The researchers have objective  to collect and fix, if possible, all groups of marine invertebrate animals and algae with lifetime photographing of collected specimens, including in the natural habitat.

There will be composed the atlas-determinant of the marine life of the island of Matua and the neighboring islands, the video and photography of the bottom relief in dive sites for analysis of hydrographic characteristics according to the results of the expedition.
There will be reconstructed the activity of the Peak Sarychev Volcano for the last 100 thousand years and the level of its modern activity will be determined.
