V Baltic Geography Olympiad in Latvia

In Latvia, the V Baltic Geography Olympiad took place in the city of Valmiera. Winners were representatives of the Russian team. They competed with schoolchildren from Belarus, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Estonia.

The team was supervised by Nikita Mozgunov, the Deputy Dean of Geographical Faculty of Moscow State University,  associate professor of the Oryol University named after IS. Turgenev, N.A. Mozgunov and P.L. Kirillov, research associates of the Faculty of Geography of the Lomonosov Moscow State University.

The competition included various theoretical questions, practical tasks on bio- geography, geology, urban geography, cartography, as well as multimedia quizzes. All tasks were in English.

Alen Kospanov from Moscow won one of three gold medals. Muscovites Katarina Mechnikova and Olga Bogdanova won silver medals. Bronze medals were given to Mikhail Selyugin from Perm and Vyacheslav Bogolyubsky from Chelyabinsk.

In 2019, the organizing Committee plans to hold the VI Baltic Geography Olympiad in Russia in one of the Baltic regions. 

The Russian team is now facing other challenges – the International geography Olympiad (iGeo), which will be held in early August in Quebec (Canada), for which they will train in a camp in the Tver region.
