Moscow hosted the Russian Geographical Society Award for the first time on December 9, 2014. The award has international status.

The ceremony was opened by the President of the Russian Geographical Society Sergey Shoigu. "For us, it is fundamentally important to note specific people - those who are studying our country today and creating its history," he stressed.

The honorary guests of the event were the President of the Russian Federation and the Russian Geographical Society`s Board of Trustees Chairman Vladimir Putin; cosmonauts Alexei Leonov and Viktor Savinykh; director Nikita Mikhalkov; members of the Russian Geographical Society`s Board of Trustees Andrei Bokarev, Victor Vekselberg, Magomed Magomedov, Petr Aven, Gennady Timchenko; and other famous people.

The jury of the Award includes 20 famous figures from the fields of science, culture and art. Among them are Emir Kusturica, Nikolai Drozdov, Vladimir Potanin, Frederic Paulsen, Valentina Tereshkova, Ilya Lagutenko, Anastasia Chernobrovina.

Applications for the Award were accepted on the website of the Russian Geographical Society for a month and a half: from August 1 to September 15. There were 350 projects received. The representatives of Russia and other countries, whose work is aimed at studying and preserving the rich national heritage of our country, and also serves to unleash the potential of the country and its citizens, participated in the competition.

Winners were determined in seven main and one special nomination.

"Expeditions and travels"

The award was received by the authors of the “Arctic Floating University” and “Far Eastern Floating University” projects Leonid Vasiliev and Vadim Gaponenko.

"Natural and cultural heritage of Russia"

The award was  presented to the “Kyzyl-Kuragino” archaeological and geographic expedition, to the project manager Natalya Solovyova, as well as the expedition members.

"The best media project"

The winners were the filmmakers of the movies "Lend-Lease  1. ALSIB: Secret Route" and "Lend-Lease  2. Gone with the Sea" - director Anastasia Popova and screenwriter Svetlana Rodina.

The project "The assessment of the thickness and volume of Elbrus glaciers according to geophysical research" became the laureate in the nomination "Geographical research". The awards to its authors -  employees of the Institute of Geography of the Russian Academy of Sciences -  Stanislav Kutuzov and Ivan Lavrentyev, were presented by the First Vice-President of the Russian Geographical Society Artur Chilingarov.

Teacher Ivan Kolechkin and his students received prizes for winning in the nomination "Youth Projects" with the television project "Lessons in Geography". The names of the winners were announced by the famous Serbian film director Emir Kusturica.

“The best foreign project” was the “Wild Odyssey” expedition by the French writer, photographer, and director Nicolas Vanier.

Konstantin Bogdanov, leader and organizer of an expedition dedicated to the study of the ship of the line “Lefort”, was recognized as "The Russian Geographical Society`s Person of the Year".

Konstantin received the award from the hands of the Russian Geographical Society`s Board of Trustees Chairman, President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin. The President emphasized that Bogdanov and his team were doing very significant work, which was always important, but acquired special significance on the eve of the 70th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War.

The ceremony ended with the presentation of a special award -  "Legend of the Russian Geographical Society". Its recipient was Maria Glazovskaya - a landscape scientist and geochemist, Distinguished Professor of Lomonosov Moscow State University, an honorary member of the Russian Geographical Society.
