Since its foundation, the Russian Geographical Society has been involved in organizing diverse exhibition projects.

The Russian Pavilion became the first major geographical exhibition of the Russian Geographical Society. It was organized by the Russian Geographical Society at the International Geographic Exhibition as part of the II International Geological Congress (CIM) in Paris in 1875.

In 1892, Dmitry Anuchin, an ethnographer and honorary member of the Society, organized the first geographic exhibition held in Russia in the Historical Museum of Moscow. Its exhibits later became the basis for the collection of the university's geographical museum. The Russian Geographical Society also played  a big role in the opening of the Geography Museum of  Lomonosov Moscow State University in 1951. Yury Konstantinovich Efremov, a scientific secretary of the Moscow branch and honorary member of the USSR Civil Defense, became the founder of the museum and the chairman of its first directorate.

When the Society got its own building in St. Petersburg, it finally became possible to exhibit samples brought from expeditions there, as well as to organize thematic and anniversary exhibitions to present the rich archive of the Russian Geographical Society. The first exhibition was held a few months after the building opened its doors, at the beginning of 1910: Peter Kozlov presented the finds from the expedition to the “black city” Khara-Khoto. Such exhibitions often take place at the headquarters of the Russian Geographical Society up to the present time.

In Soviet times, the Society continued to participate in national economy achievement exhibitions, historical exhibitions and photo exhibitions.

After the reorganization in 2009, the exhibition activities of the Russian Geographical Society broke new ground. Thus, the organization participated in a number of major photo contests and exhibitions, becoming the organizer or co-organizer of some of them.

Since 2015, the Russian Geographical Society has held an annual "Most Beautiful Country"photo contest. Works by contest finalists and winners are exhibited in Russia and abroad.
