The Barguzinsky Nature Reserve was established on January 11, 1917 on the northeastern coast of Lake Baikal in order to protect the Barguzin sable. For the first time, the Day of Nature Reserves and National Parks was celebrated in 1997 on the initiative of the Wildlife Conservation Center and the World Wildlife Fund. Today it is supported by many environmental organizations and movements.
