The third season of the "Remember the War" Complex Expedition will take place in 13 phases

The headquarters of the Northern Fleet reviewed and approved proposals for the third season of the "Remember the War" Complex Expedition in 2023. The research will be carried out in the Barents, Kara and White Seas.

At an official meeting under the leadership of the commander of the Northern Fleet, Hero of Russia Admiral Alexander Moiseev, it was determined that the third season of the expedition will take place in 13 phases. The work is already underway, the results will be summed up in November.

The Hydrographic Service of the Northern Fleet proposed to dedicate the third season of the expedition to the theme of the Great Patriotic War and conduct it under the auspices of the Russian Geographical Society together with Fertoing LLC, Konstantin Bogdanov's Reconnaissance and Diving Team, leading historians of the country, and other interested scientific institutions and organizations.

— The main tasks of the expedition are to carry out research within the framework of military-historical work, perpetuate the memory of sailors who defended of the Fatherland, master new equipment and modern methods of work, work out interaction with maritime organizations on joint research and new methods of using technical means, perform hydrographic and topogeodetic work, clarify navigational charts and manuals, — said the scientific director of the "Remember the War" Complex Expedition, head of the department of the Hydrographic Service of the Northern Fleet, Captain 1st rank Alexey Kornis.

During the expedition, it is planned to conduct an additional survey of several ships and vessels of the Northern Fleet, allies and Nazi Germany, lost or sunk in the Barents Sea during the Great Patriotic War. It is planned to search for the Soviet submarine M-122, the remains of the Soviet research vessel Perseus, the motorbots that delivered cargo for the Northern Defensive Area during the Great Patriotic War, the British Handley Page Hampden, the Boston and Hurricane aircrafts.

The first two seasons of the "Remember the War Complex Expedition took place in 2021-2022. They were timed to coincide with the 80th anniversary of the beginning of the Great Patriotic War and the 80th anniversary of the tragedy of convoy PQ-17. The expedition took place in the waters of the Barents, Kara and White Seas. 20 ships, vessels and boats of the Northern Fleet were involved in the search, the total number of personnel and civilian personnel involved exceeded 500 people.

In two years, 37 ships, vessels, boats, two planes, three bottom mines were discovered. A unique M3 Lee tank has been raised from the bottom of the sea. The Expedition also confirmed and specified the location of 34 other sunken ships and vessels.

A publication containing a detailed report on the Expedition stages conducted in 2021 was published. It contains almost all the materials obtained during the Complex Expedition, some of them are being published for the first time. 500 copies have been published. The expedition was recognized not only in the military environment, but also in the geographical community: the Northern Fleet and the RGS became the winners of the national award "Crystal Compass" in the nomination "Travels and Expeditions". The awarding ceremony took place on December 9, 2022 in Moscow.
