80th Anniversary of the Geography Faculty of MSU

This year the Faculty of Geography of Moscow State University is celebrating its 80th anniversary.

The history of the faculty dates back to 1884, when a prominent scientist Dmitry Anuchin founded the Department of Geography and Ethnography at the Faculty of History and Philology. However, the official year of birth of the faculty as an independent unit of Moscow University is 1938, when the Faculty of Soil and Geography was divided into the Faculty of Geology and Soil and the Faculty of Geography.

Since then, the work of the Faculty of Geography is inextricably linked with the development of the national system of geographical education and the university geographic school. Outstanding scientists and first-class specialists of the faculty have been and remain indispensable sources of new ideas and approaches in the field of geography in Russia and abroad. Among the graduates of the faculty are Russian geographer and glaciologist, academician Vladimir Kotlyakov, Russian economic geographer, academician Petr Baklanov, Russian biogeographer, TV presenter Nikolai Drozdov and other talented researchers.

Now the Faculty of Geography of Lomonosov Moscow State University is the world's largest teaching and research team of geographers. More than 800 students and 140 postgraduates study at the faculty, about 750 employees work, including 100 doctors and 300 candidates of science. The Dean of the Faculty is Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, professor Sergey A. Dobrolyubov. The President of the Faculty of Geography of Moscow State University is academician, first Vice-President of the Russian Geographical Society Nikolay S. Kasimov.

There has been fruitful cooperation between the Faculty of Geography and the Russian Geographical Society for decades. The collaboration between the organizations is a world-known, united movement of Russian geographers. The Faculty of Geography of Lomonosov Moscow State University and the Russian Geographical Society are, first of all, people who dedicate themselves to their work and their country.
