Arctic floating university prepares for the new voyage

Arctic floating university team will start new expedition in summer 2015.

“The Arctic floating university” is an innovative educational project designed to help young scientists - explorers of the Arctic receive knowledge and skills in real life conditions of the northern seas. The project has been running since 2012 with the support of the Russian Geographical Society.

Voyage of the floating university called “Apprehending the Russian Arctic” will start July 1. The expedition will run for 20 days. Among the participants of the voyage are Russian and foreign students, young researchers and explorers that will have to master 8 educational units and complete intensive research program. A total number of participants will be 56: 31 student, 20 lecturers and 5 administration workers.

As always, floating university team will go to the arctic aboard of the Federal Service for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring of Russia (Roshydromet) research vessel “Professor Molchanov”. The vessel is a unique research laboratory for preparation of specialist-scientists in real life conditions of the northern seas. 

Route of the expedition: Arkhangelsk –Sosnovets Island – Cape White Nose – village Varnek – Russian Bay (Novaya Zemlya) – Cape Zhelaniya (Novaya Zemlya) – Heiss Island (Franz-Josef Land) – Champ Island (Franz-Josef Land) – Hooker Island (Franz-Josef Land) – Arkhangelsk.

Route of the expedition

Educational program of the Arctic Floating University – 2015 includes complex monitoring of vegetation cover changes of the arctic tundra transitional area in the context of climate change, study of historic and cultural heritage of the national park Russian Arctic territories for the purposes of tourism and educational activities development, assessment of condition and pollution rate of local insular territories –areas of cumulative ecological damage elimination works, study of animals and populations diversity on Novaya Zemlya, Franz-Josef Land and adjacent waters.

The project has been put into practice by joint efforts of the M.V. Lomonosov Northern (Arctic) Federal University (NArFU), Federal Service for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring of Russia (Roshydromet) and Arkhangelsk branch of the Russian Geographical Society.
