The Russian Geographical Society announces the postponement of the date of the Geographical Dictation – 2021. The large-scale international educational event, initiated by the President of Russia, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Russian Geographical Society, Vladimir Putin, will take place on November 14.

At the moment, registration of the Dictation venues continues on the website dictant.rgo.ru. We remind you that any Russian and foreign organizations – schools, universities, libraries, museums, national parks and others – can organize a venue for it.

For example, among the most unusual venues are the “Akademik Lomonosov” nuclear power barge, the Nizhny Novgorod-Moscow train, the “Cruiser ‘Aurora’” museum-ship, the Mission Control Center, oil platforms in the Caspian Sea, and the Katun Biosphere Reserve.

You can apply to hold the Dictation at your venue until November 5, 2021.

Please note that when conducting the Dictation, all venues must take into account the current epidemiological situation in a particular region and adhere to the recommendations of Rospotrebnadzor.

In the event of a worsening epidemiological situation, all venues of the event will be given the opportunity to change their status from on-site to remote and hold the event in a remote format.

It will be possible to take the Geographical Dictation on the Internet. The online event starts on the website dictant.rgo.ru on the same day as at the on-site venues, but it will go on for several days so that everyone who wants to have time to test their knowledge can have the opportunity to do so. This year, the online geographical testing will run from 14:00 on November 14, to 14:00 on November 24, Moscow time.

Traditionally, the Geographical Dictation – 2021 will be compiled in four versions, each of which will include 40 questions, divided into two parts. The first part of the basic level of 10 questions is "geographical educational program" based on well-known facts from geography. The second part of 30 questions will require the use of creative thinking, logic and erudition.

The Geographical Dictation has been held annually since 2015. Participants anonymously answer questions about the geography of Russia. Assessment of the level of geographical literacy is not the main task of the event. It is educational in nature and aims to popularize geographical knowledge, as well as to increase interest in science and national heritage.

In six years, almost 1.8 million people have taken part in the project. In 2017, the Dictation became international for the first time: it was written in 25 countries around the world. In 2020, the number of participating countries, including Russia, reached 110. The event took place on all continents except Antarctica, and even in space – on the ISS.
