Ilya Gurov, First Deputy Executive Director of the Russian Geographical Society, made a presentation called "Semyon Remezov's Map: A Unique Witness of Contacts between Russia, China, India, and Iran in the 17th Century" as part of the business program at the International Municipal Forum of the BRICS countries, which takes place in Moscow on August 27-28.

Ilya Gurov spoke in detail about the creation of the map, about the multifaceted personality of Semyon Remezov, about the large-scale plans of the Russian Geographical Society for the restoration and popularization of this unique document, which is evidence of long-standing ties between Russia and the BRICS countries.

“This logistics map was oriented to the south, and even then it reflected the reality that has now come to us again,” he noted. “Russia was aimed at interacting with its neighbors in the south and in the east: with China, India, and Persia, that is, in fact, it was BRICS in the format of the 17th century. And now the Remezov’s map should become a mechanism for continuing this interaction in the field of cultural heritage, technological exchange, educational programs, and geopolitical symbolism.”

For the BRICS+ countries, which actively promote their cultural heritage on the world stage, participation in the restoration of the Remezov’s map can be a symbolic step emphasizing unity and common cultural roots.

The use of sophisticated technologies and methods can become a good basis for a mutually beneficial exchange of experience and knowledge between specialists from the BRICS+ countries.

Joint work on the creation and dissemination of educational materials in the BRICS+ countries can enhance cultural exchange and scientific cooperation.

Finally, participation in the restoration project and mutual support can be used by the BRICS+ countries to demonstrate their commitment to strengthening multilateral ties and cultural dialogue within the framework of the group.

This good and large project already has partners, for example, the FESCO Transportation Group, which has signed a cooperation agreement with the Russian Geographical Society.

“Semyon Remezov's map of Siberia, a unique monument of the pre-Petrine school of Russian cartography, is a beautiful symbol of Russia's cultural and geographical ties with the BRICS countries that go back centuries,” Ilya Gurov emphasized.
