The 27th of January in the Headquarters of the Russian Geographical Society in the North Capital there will take place the commemorative meeting of the St. Petersburg city branch of the Russian Geographical Society «The broken ring of Pulkovo Meridian». The meeting is dedicated to the day of complete liberation of Leningrad from the German blockade, and will he held chaired by the Vice-president of the Society Kirill Chistyakov.

The Russian (All-Union at those times) Geographical Society made a great contribution to the defense and strengthening of the power of the country during the war years. From the very first days of the war there was placed a clearing hospital № 2010, and significant part of the members of the Society and the staff were drafted into the Red Army in the building of the Geographical Society. For providing the work of the Society there was created «The Committee of geographical knowledge», having focused on performing emergency work on the instructions of the military command.

Long-term  ice monitoring by the Hydrometeorological Committee and observation the topography of the Ladoga Lake became key information when laying the famous «Road of Life», - the only one traffic artery, connecting besieged city with the Big Land. The employees of the Society went on keeping lecturing work in hospitals, parts and units of the Red Army, and the Library of the Geographical Society was working without a break during the siege.

The honorable members of the Russian Geographical Society – the World War II veterans, members of the St. Petersburg city branch of the Russian Geographical Society, representatives of public organizations of the city and high school students of St. Petersburg and Leningrad region. Specially for the veterans there will be prepared the literary and art composition devoted to the 72nd anniversary of breaking the siege of Leningrad, and a concert.
