The Russian Geographical Society and the Geographical Society of Cuba have signed an agreement on cooperation. The ceremony took place the 25th of September at the Headquarters of the Russian Geographical Society in Moscow. The document is dedicated to joint activities of the parties in the field of environmental protection, as well as the promotion and development of geography.

The Geographical Society of Cuba is a non-governmental scientific association uniting professional geographers and people who are fond of geography. It was founded the 19th of October, 1989.

The Agreement was signed by the First Vice-President of the Russian Geographical Society, Academician Nikolay Kasimov and the President of the Geographical Society of Cuba, Professor of the University of Havana Jose Mateo. Mr. Mateo, who once studied in the graduate school of the Faculty of Geography of the Lomonosov Moscow State University, recalled the important role of Soviet scientists in the development of geography in Cuba: "It can be said that Cuban science was formed under the influence of Russia. 80 of our candidates of geographical sciences studied at Moscow State University, and Soviet professors came to Cuba, and with their help the National Atlas of Cuba was made. "

"I believe that the links between the Russian Geographical Society and the Geographical Society of Cuba need to be developed and strengthened," - Nikolai Kasimov said, - "The visit of Jose Mateo is extremely important for us. We have decided that we should sign a cooperation agreement that could outline the common milestones of our joint affairs ".

The Head of the Department of Socio-Economic Geography of Foreign Countries of the  Faculty of Geography of Moscow State University  Alexey Naumov immediately voiced the topics of possible cooperation: the holding of the photo exhibition "The Most Beautiful Country" and the Geographic Dictation of the Russian Geographical Society in Cuba, as well as the participation of scientists from the Island of Freedom in the Young Scientifically-Practical Summer School of the Russian Geographical Society.

"It's great if an application for participation in our school was sent by the Cuban geographer, and then took part in it, it would become such a bridge for the continuation of cooperation that began long ago," - Alexey Naumov suggested.
