Dictation Online: Four More Days to Answer 40 New Geo-Questions

For the eighth time, the international educational campaign of the Russian Geographical Society "Geographical Dictation" united residents of different countries interested in geographical science, natural, and cultural heritage of Russia. Hundreds of thousands of people took part in the event on all continents of the Earth and even in space. Those who did not have time to test their knowledge at in-person and remote venues on October 30 can join the event thanks to the online format.

The online Dictation is available on the website dic.rgo.ru until 14:00 on November 10, Moscow time.

You don’t need to register to take the test, and the result is known immediately after completing all tasks. If you don’t like your score, you can retake the online Dictation an unlimited number of times.

The test includes two blocks of questions: 10 easy and 30 more difficult. You have 45 minutes to answer them. Please note that the certificate for participation in the online Dictation is not provided.

The famous Russian scientist of the 18th century Mikhail Vasilyevich Lomonosov devoted an entire ode-reflection to this natural phenomenon. "Evening Meditation on God's Majesty in the Case of the Great Northern Lights" (rus. “Вечернее размышление о Божием величестве при случае великого северного сияния”) is an ode by Lomonosov, written in 1743. In his homeland, the Archangelgorod Governorate, live, among others, the Pomors – it is in their dialect that the northern lights are called "pazori". In Latin, this phenomenon is called “aurora borealis” after the ancient Roman goddess of the dawn Aurora and the ancient Greek god of the north wind Boreas. The semi-submersible drilling rig “Severnoye Siyaniye”(eng. “Northern Lights”) built offshore wells on the shelf of Sakhalin Island and on the Arctic shelf in the waters of the Kara and Barents Seas.

Fata Morgana is an optical phenomenon consisting of several forms of mirages. Named after the character of English legends – Fairy Morgana. Volcanic lightning is a weather phenomenon characterized by the formation of lightning in a cloud of ash rising from the mouth of a volcano during an eruption. Vulcan is the name of the ancient Roman god of fire. Parhelion is a type of halo, and Helios is an ancient Greek solar deity.
