On April 25, a meeting of the Expert Commission of the photo contest "The Most Beautiful Country", which is held annually by the Russian Geographical Society, took place at the Moscow Headquarters of the Russian Geographical Society. During the discussion, 13 reputable photographers and photo editors identified the works that made it to the finals. The next stage is the meeting of the Jury and the selection of the winners of the contest.
The selection process turned out to be difficult – directly opposite opinions often collided. However, it is the discussions of the experts that allow to work out the most correct solution.
“I have worked in the jury of many international competitions and have an idea of the professional level of their participants,” Andrey Gudkov, a professional wildlife photographer, shared his impressions. “When I looked through the works of ‘The Most Beautiful Country’, I was pleasantly surprised. This is the highest artistic level and the highest technical performance. But the main thing is the presence of that photographic idea, which ultimately leads to victory.”
Experts analyzed about a thousand works in 10 categories: "Landscape", "Wild Animals", "Birds", "Elemental Magic", "Russia from a Bird's Eye View", "Faces of Russia", "Live Archive", "Art of Wildlife (fine-art photography)", "Macroworld", and "Taken on a Smartphone". Finalists were also selected in four categories of the children's contest: "Animal World", "World from a Bird's Eye View", "Landscape", and "Natural Phenomena".
In addition, an online voting will be announced in the near future to determine the winner of the People’s Choice Award, in which only finalists participate.
The winners in the main categories of the RGS’s photo contest "The Most Beautiful Country" will receive 250,000 rubles each. The works of all finalists will be published in a colorful photo album and will take part in exhibitions around the world. The award ceremony will be held in October 2023.
