Geography Holiday Held in a Moscow Park

On Saturday, August 4, events devoted to the Days of the Russian Geographical Society were held in the Bauman Garden. The guests of the geographical holiday visited interesting lectures, master classes, watched educational film shows and much more.

Throughout the day researchers and travelers greeted guests from the main park stage. Executive Director of the Center for Marine Research of Lomonosov Moscow State University Nikolay Shabalin gave a lecture about underwater inhabitants and sunken treasures - "Pantries Neptune’s pantries: what does the Ocean keep? Expert on tourist travelling from RussiaDiscovery Marianna Poymanova conducted a virtual tour of the mysterious Siberian mountain range, the Plateau Putorana. Employees of the Amur Tiger Center spoke about the ways to improve the habitat of rare cats and to stop poaching. Victor Lukarevsky, a PhD in Biological Sciences and a representative of the Information Analytical Center for Supporting Nature Conservation, told the guests about the endangered snow leopard.

Young guests took part in master classes in the open air. At a practical lesson devoted to the inhabitants of the Komandorsky Reserve the boys and girls learned a lot of amazing facts about the life of wild animals, made magnets in the form of animals living on the Commander Islands. The master class "A Lab of Russian coats of arms" introduced the guests to such science as heraldry; the children designed their own coats of arms. And the lesson "From the Varangians to the Greeks" helped the participants learn what and how was traded in Russia.

In the breaks between lectures and master classes everyone could participate in geographical quizzes, put geo-puzzles, train memory with Memory cards  or imagine themselves the brave captains in the game "Admiral: the age of sail battles."

Works of the finalists of the Most Beautiful Country photo contest were exhibited in the park. The visitors were able to see amazing images of wild animals, underwater world, natural and cultural attractions of Russia.

The summer cinema in the park prepared for the children and adults a show of cartoons from the series "Multi-Russia" about the regions of this country, as well as the film "Rusanov’s Expedition. The last labour of "Hercules" on the exploration of coal deposits on Svalbard and the heroism of Russian polar explorers.

The event closed with the announcement of the GeoQuest winners. The quest took place in Moscow. Twenty teams trying to win ended their route in the Bauman Garden.  Answering the quest questions, the participants learnt the history and activities of the Russian Geographical Society and natural and cultural attractions of Moscow. 

The next Geo Day and the final one held by the Society in Moscow parks will take place August 18 in the Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve.
