The Russian Geographical Society together with the Institute for the History of Material Culture of the Russian Academy of Sciences would like to encourage everyone aged 18 to 35 to enter an international contest for participation in the expedition aimed at rescuing archaeological monuments on the bottom of the Sayan Sea. A scientific journey will take place from May 20 to July 10, 2018 at the Sayano-Shushenskoye reservoir in the Republic of Tyva.
The Sayano-Shushenskoye reservoir was created together with the Sayano-Shushenskaya hydroelectric plant. Being more than 250 kilometers in length, it is located in the Krasnoyarsk Territory and the Republic of Tyva. Constant changes in water level are destructive to the coastline where there are numerous monuments of ancient history, of which many are of great interest and value for historians and archaeologists, in particular, the burial mounds of Hunnu Terezin and Ala-Tey (II century BC - I century AD).
Participants in the expedition will spend a month and a half exploring the banks of Upper Yenisey by using modern fixing methods. 3D modeling to record rock drawings and petroglyphs, monitoring and rescue excavations of the most destroyed monuments (the burial grounds of Chinge, Kuilug-Khem, Sumy-Besh, Terezin, Ala-Tey and others) would also be undertaken.

In addition to archaeological activities, the expedition members will be able to enjoy an interesting program of cultural activities: lectures, film shows, sports events and a sauna on the territory of a camp. Exciting trips to major sights of the region will also be organized.
To join the expedition, it is required to fill in an application. The deadline for applications is April 22, 2018. We pay special attention to the fact that applicants should be physically fit and strong – 1-2 health groups, sports categories and GTO standards implementation will be an advantage.
IMPORTANT: encephalitic vaccination is required.
The participants will be provided with food and lodging. Transportation from Moscow to the site of excavations and back will be provided for foreign citizens. For more information see these Rules.
