An exhibition has opened in Zheleznogorsk, telling about the legendary “Everest-96” expedition, whose participants were the first in Russian history to climb the highest peak in the world. The exhibition was organized on the initiative of the Zheleznogorsk Local Branch of the Russian Geographical Society, the Siberian Fire and Rescue Academy of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia, and the sports museum of the Krasnoyarsk State Autonomous Institution "Sports Training Center".

On May 20, 1996, for the first time in the history of mountaineering, a team of athletes from Krasnoyarsk and Zheleznogorsk reached the highest point of the planet from Tibet’s side along the northeastern wall. This most difficult path traversed by the “Everest-96” expedition has since been called the “Krasnoyarsk Route”.

The “Krasnoyarsk Everest” exhibition in Zheleznogorsk was opened by the head of the Siberian Academy of the Ministry of Emergency Situations Ivan Sergeev; a member of the Zheleznogorsk Branch of the RGS (initiator of the event), deputy of the Legislative Assembly of the Krasnoyarsk Territory Alexey Kulesh; head of the Krasnoyarsk State Autonomous Institution "Sports Training Center" Svetlana Khodyush; and the chairman of the Zheleznogorsk Local Branch of the RGS Sergey Sharanov. The main participants of the special event were members of the “Everest-96” expedition, veterans of the mountaineering movement of the Krasnoyarsk Territory Nikolai Zakharov, Nikolai Smetanin, Valery Kohanov, Sergey Antipin, member of the Zheleznogorsk Branch of the Russian Geographical Society Alexander Bekasov, as well as guests of honor: legendary mountaineer-doctor Yuri Smirnov, and Alyona Kuznetsova, wife of Pyotr Kuznetsov.
