Humanity is characterized by the desire to conquer new spaces. People at all times were attracted by the unknown distant lands, tormented by the question ‘what is there, beyond the horizon?’. But any journey full of adventure and discovery is made wonderful by the return to one’s home shores. Like hundreds of years ago, the first thing that a sailor sees when approaching a familiar harbor is the light of a lighthouse, breaking through thick fog or dark night, illuminating the way home. The Russian Geographical Society publishes the best photographs of the "Lighthouses of Russia" competition, designed to draw attention to the history of the lighthouse business in the country, to remind of the need to respect the cultural heritage of the native land.
The “Lighthouses of Russia” competition was held by the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation jointly with the Russian Geographical Society in 2020–2021. The jury was presented with almost 500 photographs taken by photographers from all over the country – from Kaliningrad to Vladivostok, from Murmansk to Sevastopol.
The winners of the competition were determined in three categories. Now you can get acquainted with the best works on the website of the Russian Geographical Society.
