The document was signed by First Deputy Minister of Education and Science of Russia Natalia Tretiak and First Vice-President of the Russian Geographical Society Academician Nikolai Kasimov.
As stressed by Natalia, the agreement was not the beginning but the continuation of joint work of the Ministry and the Society, as well as an excellent example of cooperation between government bodies and public organizations.
- Geographical education – is not only the knowledge about the land, nature, wealth of our country and the world, but it is also education of love and respect for the place where you live – said Tretiak. – Raising responsible citizens, who will hold and love their country. And therefore it is impossible to overestimate the importance of today’s event. I am confident that the agreement will give development to even more fruitful and active cooperation between the Russian Geographical Society and the Ministry of Education and Science, as in scientific research and in the education and upbringing of our youth …
- Today, the Society unites about 80 thousand pupils and students from all regions of our country, and more than a thousand experts in geographical and environmental education – said Nikolai Sergeyevich. – Together with Lomonosov Moscow State University Youth Center of the Russian Geographical Society was established and now works fruitfully.
The Society provides help to a lot of youth projects. Some of them, such as the Arctic and Far East “floating universities”, as well as the international archaeological and geographical expedition “Kyzyl – Kuragino” have received worldwide acclaim. For boys and girls from around the world these Society’s expeditions became an opportunity to participate in major research projects and to get a unique professional and life experience …
Key courses of the work within the framework of a joint activity of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation and the Russian Geographical Society will be the introduction of civil and patriotic programs for children’s centers “Artek”, «Orlyonok” (Eaglet), “Ocean”, «Change» (Smena) into practice. In addition, in the nearest future: joint development of Olympiad movement, participation in the examination of geography textbooks, development of relevant manuals and popularization of the subject.
- I have a dream, that geography, along with history and literature will become one of the compulsory subjects in the state exam, – said Nikolay Kasimov.
First Deputy Minister of Education and Science “promised to think” on this topic.
“We are open for cooperation and are interested in public support,” – said Natalia Tretiak. And as a proof of her words invited the chairman of Ivanovo branch of the Russian Geographical Society Oleg Volynkin that leads in a lot of work with young people, to participate in the workshops of the regional ministry.
