The Russian Geographical Society invites you to take part in a series of thematic blitz contests, thanks to which everyone can offer their ideas for the questions for the Geographical Dictation – 2023. The topic of this week is "Ecology and Biogeography".

Let's briefly repeat the general concept. Seven blitz contests "Write Your Question for the Geographical Dictation" are timed to the Year of the Teacher and Mentor.

A couple of contests are held weekly on a specific topic inspired by memorable dates and somewhat related to school courses.

Facts and questions sent to each of the blitz contests should be focused on the geography of Russia in relation to the proposed topic.

Students compete in stories about the most interesting facts that they have learned thanks to their teachers, and mentors share the most unusual questions that their students have asked.

The international contest "Write Your Question for the Geographical Dictation – 2023" is held from February 13 to May 17. You can submit no more than three original questions for it. Participation in both the series of blitz contests and the international contest is welcome, but sending the same question is not allowed.

The topic of the second week – when International Polar Bear Day (February 27) and World Wildlife Day (March 3) are celebrated in the world – is "Ecology and Biogeography". We are waiting for the most memorable and entertaining facts that impressed the students and were remembered by the mentors, non-standard questions from the world of animals and plants.

The ideas submitted to the contests under this topic should be devoted to the protection of nature and biodiversity of our country. Questions and facts may relate to:

species composition of animals and plants, fungi and other living organisms, their unique features;

rare species, including those listed in the Red Book of Russia/the International Red Book;

protection and reintroduction of rare plant and animal species carried out in Russia/by domestic scientists;

history and development of environmental protection activities in Russia, specially protected natural areas (nature reserves, national parks, botanical gardens, etc.) of Russia;

unique ecosystems located in our country;

the ecological state of the territory of Russia.

Questions and facts on the general theory and practice of floristics, zoogeography, and biogeographic zoning are also welcome.

In order for your idea to be accepted for the contest and, in case of victory, form the basis of one of the tasks of the main version of the Geographical Dictation of 2023, the fact or question sent must meet a number of criteria.

Types: Closed-type questions with multiple answers are accepted for the contests, and there can be only one correct answer in each question. Therefore, for a fact from the world of geography, only one indisputable interpretation should be possible. The requirements for questions and facts and examples of their presentation are listed in Appendix No. 1 in the Regulations of the Contest.

Originality: The contests accept questions and facts that do not repeat the content of the tasks of the Geographical Dictation of previous years. You can view all the variants of the previous seasons of the event – and at the same time test yourself – here.

Number: There is a strict restriction here – one person can offer only three ideas.

Let us briefly remind you how the series of short thematic contests is conducted.

Questions and facts are checked by the experts who determine the best ideas on the basis of which the tasks of the main version of the Dictation will be formulated.

Two winners of each topic – a mentor and a student – will receive certificates and a gift certificate that allows you to pay for a tourist trip with an open date along one of the routes recommended by the RGS.

The list of winners will appear on the RGS’s website no later than May 17, 2023.

The competition commission can also determine a group of finalists, from among which no more than four runners-up can be named within each topic.
