On August 18, the "Night of Geography" was held for the first time in Russia and the world. The event was dedicated to the 175th anniversary of the Russian Geographical Society and Geographer’s Day. Anyone could take part in the event and register their venue on a virtual map.

In total, 64 applications were received from venues, where 78 events were held. Despite the fact that the event was held for the first time, 33 constituent entities of the Russian Federation took part in it.

Those wishing to take part in the "Night of Geography" were given a wide range of activities: film screenings, quizzes, lectures, travel stories, theme nights, presentations of new projects, interactive games, creative meetings, poetry evenings, educational intensive courses, live broadcasts from reserves, video contests, installation of commemorative plaques, virtual and real excursions, hikes, tea drinking, meetings by the fire and guitar songs.

Foreign partners of the Russian Geographical Society also took part in the "Night of Geography".  Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Transnistria, Macedonia, France, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia and India have developed their own programs.

The “National Association of Geographers, India” (NAGI), for example, held a quiz among its members on the topic "Expand your geographical knowledge of Russia". About 300 people took part in it. Two participants scored the maximum number of points and were awarded special diplomas from the Russian Geographical Society and NAGI.

Online excursions around the Moscow Headquarters of the Russian Geographical Society were posted, in Russian and English, on the website of the RGS. This way anyone who wishes can touch the living history of the Society without leaving their home. You can visit the excursion here.
