The 21st of June there was open the exhibition «Petr Semenov-Tyan-Shansky - geographer, statistician, traveler. On the occasion of the 190th anniversary of his birth» at the Headquarters of the Russian Geographical Society in St. Petersburg.

The participants of the ceremony were greeted by the Governor of St. Petersburg Georgy Poltavchenko and the Vice-President of the Russian Geographical Society Kirill Chistyakov.

 «Petr Petrovich made a huge contribution to the development of ancient science, - Georgy Poltavchenko noted, - he was not only explorer and scientist, but statesman as well. Thanks to the active educational and scientific work of the Russian Geographical Society his case still lives today».

The Vice-president of the Russian Geographical Society told about the uniqueness of the exhibition, where the personal belongings of the scientist are presented, carefully preserved by his descendants, and the documents, stored in the Scientific Archives of the Society. «Petr Semenov-Tyan-Shansky – is the sign figure for the Russian Geographical Society. We are very glad, that we managed to create such an exposition», Chistyakov emphasized.

The jubilee exhibition is dedicated to various parties of activity of Petr Semyonov-Tyan-Shansky, his scientific research and administrative work. The exposition recreates the scientist's study, where the objects of historical situation from the apartment where he lived and the paintings of the artist Pavel Kosharov, made during the expedition to the Tien Shan in 1856-1857, and the materials of the First All-Russian Population Census of 1897, are presented. The most part of the materials, connected with the life and work of Petr Semyonov-Tyan-Shansky, had never been exhibited before and they will be presented to the general public for the first time.

Several tours of the exhibition will be held by the great-grandson of the outstanding scientist Alexander Semyonov-Tyan-Shansky.

The working time of the exhibition is the following: till the 19th of January, 2018, on Wednesdays, by appointment by phone (812) 315-85-35.
