Red Book Tulips Bloomed In Astrakhan Steppes

A rarely beautiful natural phenomenon can be seen on the territory of the Bogdinsko-Baskunchaksky State Nature Reserve now. There, because of the early spring Schrenck's tulips bloomed. Due to the reduction of the natural habitat of this plant, it is listed in the Red Book of Russia.

Schrenck's tulip was named in honor of Alexander Ivanovich Schrenk. He was born on February 4, 1816 in the estate of Triznovo located in Odoyevsky district, Tula province and died in Dorpat on June 25, 1876). A.I.Schrenk was a traveler, assistant professor in the mineralogy of Dorpat (Tartu) University. Schrenck's tulip is an early flowering plant. Depending on weather conditions, its flowering period lasts from 7 to 14 days. Strictly prohibited the collection of plants for bouquets and digging bulbs, selling flowers and bulbs. It is considered one of the "ancestors" of the first cultivated varieties (Duc van Tol class, known since the end of the XVI century).

For several days, the steppe is covered with a colorful carpet, which many tourists come to admire every year during this period. A holiday will be held in the reserve on April 20 - the Tulip Day.
