The expedition members will search for underwater historical objects in the region of Severny Island of the Novaya Zemlya archipelago, the Taymyr Peninsula, the New Siberian and the Lyakhovsky Islands, the De Long Islands, Wrangel Island, the Chukchi Peninsula, Severnaya Zemlya, and Franz Josef Land. Also, experts will study the objects of cultural and natural heritage located on these islands; continue the search for historical artifacts.

Along the route, the project participants will establish memorials in honor of the expeditions of famous Russian travelers. In particular, a sign will be erected on the Nablyudenij Island in memory of the Russian polar expedition of Eduard von Toll; on the Gerkules Island – in memory of the expedition of Vladimir Rusanov; on Herald Island – in memory of the expedition of Georgy Ushakov.

“Three years in a row, the Russian Geographical Society and the Northern Fleet have been joining forces to jointly research the Arctic region of our homeland. Traditionally, the research and media groups of the Russian Geographical Society will take part in the expedition to the Arctic archipelagos,” comments Sergey Chechulin, director of the expeditionary and tourism development department of the RGS Executive Board. “This year, when our country celebrates the 75th anniversary of the Great Victory, as part of the expedition, a historico-patriotic event "The Arctic Front" will take place. During the event the burial places of the defenders of the Arctic will be refurbished. Today I want to congratulate all sailors of the Northern Sea fleet on the Northern Fleet Day and wish them good health and success in their hard but very necessary military work!"

We would like to remind you, that this is the third joint Arctic expedition of the Russian Geographical Society and the Northern Fleet. In 2019, an expedition took place on the Franz Josef Land archipelago, a year earlier - on Novaya Zemlya. On the Arctic islands, the fleet servicemen, along with the scientific groups of the Russian Geographical Society, reconstructed the paths of pioneers, restored historical and cultural monuments, and performed environmental, biological, and other studies. In 2019, the expedition managed to discover five new islands that appeared after the ice had melted.
