RGS Announces a Competition for Participation in the “New Generation” Project

The Russian Geographical Society, together with Rossotrudnichestvo (The Federal Agency for the Commonwealth of Independent States, Compatriots Living Abroad and International Humanitarian Cooperation), announces a competition for participation in the “New Generation” project - a program of short-term study trips to Russia for young representatives of political, public, scientific and business circles of foreign countries.

This year, the Russian Geographical Society has prepared a program “Nature reserve management in the protected areas of Siberia” which will take place from August 17 to August 25, 2024 in the Krasnoyarsk Territory and the Republic of Khakassia in unique natural reserves: the Sayano-Shushenski Nature Reserve and the Khakassia Nature Reserve.  

Both reserves are part of the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves and characterized by rich natural and climate diversity. Employees of the reserves and external experts conduct active scientific and educational activities, as well as outreach programs to monitor the dynamics of natural processes, develop the scientific foundations of nature conservation, preserve biological diversity, solve regional environmental problems and raise environmental awareness of the population.

Program participants will be able to study the best practices of Russian nature reserves, attend environmental education modules from experts in the field of nature reserves and tourism, present their own reports, take part in environmental campaigns and visit the main tourist sights of the reserves.

The program is open for young leaders from foreign countries aged 25 to 35 years. Professional specializations: nature reserve management, ecology, tourism, protection of rare species of plants and animals, geography, zoology, biology. Fluency in Russian is an advantage. Selection is carried out on a competitive basis.

Other obligatory conditions for participation:

  • foreign citizenship, absence of Russian citizenship;
  • permanent residence outside the Russian Federation;
  • the candidate has not previously participated in the “New Generation” project.

The organizers of the program provide travel tickets to Russia from the country of residence and back, transfer on the territory of Russia, accommodation, meals, cultural program and medical insurance.

To submit your application, please prepare your documents and send them to a.timofeevaatrgo.ru until May 31, 2024 with a subject line “New Generation 2024”. List of documents:

  • completed word form of candidate No. 1(saved in original format);
  • completed excel application form of candidate No. 2(saved in original format);
  • scan of the foreign passport (valid for at least 6 months at the time of participation in the program);
  • motivation letter on the topic “Why I should take part in the program on nature reserve management” in Russian (preferably) or English, no more than 2 pages;
  • CV;
  • photo;
  • additional materials (preferably): letters of recommendation signed by hierarchical superiors (for employees) or head of chair/research advisor (for students); links to scientific publications on relevant topics, confirmation of achievements, etc.);
