The Russian Geographical Society is announcing the date of the Geographical Dictation 2020. A large-scale international educational campaign, initiated by the President of Russia, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the RGS Vladimir Putin, will be held on November 29.
We would like to remind you, that the Geographical Dictation have been taking place annually since 2015. The event participants anonymously answer questions about the geography of Russia. It can be both questions on the knowledge of well-known facts from geography, and tasks that require the use of visual thinking, logic, deep erudition.
In five years, more than 1,315,000 people took part in the project. From 2015 to 2019, the number of participants in the action had grown six times.
Until 2016, inclusive, the event was held only in Russia, then it went international. In 2019, the number of participating countries amounted to 107. The Dictation took place throughout almost entire Europe, in the USA, Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia, Indonesia, Australia, South Africa, Kenya, Nepal, Japan and other countries. The Dictation was written on all continents except Antarctica, and even in space - on the ISS.
The Dictation venues are traditionally organized in schools, universities, libraries, museums, nature reserves and many other places. Among the most unusual Dictation venues through the years are the “Aurora” Cruiser Museum, Mission Control Center, oil platforms in the Caspian Sea. Over the five years, the number of event venues had grown 26 times - from 210 in 2015 to 5,469 in 2019.
Any organization can apply to host the Dictation within its walls on the website dictant.rgo.ru. We will inform you about the deadlines for accepting applications in 2020 later on.
Annually, the central venue of the event is Lomonosov Moscow State University. Here, together with other participants, famous scientists, politicians, athletes and show business stars write the Dictation. In particular, in different years the Dictation was written by the President of the RGS, Sergey Shoigu; the rector of Lomonosov Moscow State University, Viktor Sadovnichy; the cosmonaut, Fedor Yurchikhin; TV presenter, Nikolai Drozdov; Olympic champion, Alexei Nemov; musician, Sergey Shnurov; and many others. Famous TV hosts Valdis Pelsh, Pyotr Kuleshov, Yana Churikova and others have been the moderators of the event at its central venue.
The Geographical Dictation can also be written on the Internet. The online dictation starts on the site dictant.rgo.ru on the same day when it is held at offline venues. However, it lasts for several days, so that everyone can test their knowledge.
It should be noted that in 2020, the RGS held a competition for the best questions for the Dictation for the first time. The questions will appear in the Dictation forms along with the questions from prominent experts. It is planned that the competition will be held in the following years as well.
