RGS Headquarters visited by Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Russia

On October 5, 2023, the Headquarters of the Russian Geographical Society in Moscow was visited by a delegation of the Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the Russian Federation headed by Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Dauren Abayev.

The delegation got acquainted with the history and modern activities of the RGS, and also examined part of the collection of maps and unique publications stored at the Headquarters of the Society. Thus, the guests were presented the Atlas of Asian Russia (1914), the General Map of the Russian Empire from the first official Russian Atlas (1745), the writings of Shokan Shyngysuly Valikhanov, a great Kazakh scientist and educator (1904), the Daily notes of Captain Nikolai Rychkov's journey to the Kirghiz-Kaisat steppe (1772), and also one of the outstanding monuments of Russian geographical literature "Picturesque Russia" (1881-1901).

During the meeting, with the participation of Vice-President and Executive Director of the RGS Artem Manukyan and First Deputy Executive Director Ilya Gurov, the parties discussed the potential of cooperation and the possibility of implementing joint projects, including the organization of an expedition in the footsteps of P.P. Semenov-Tyan-Shansky and Ch.Ch.Valikhanov, as well as an exhibition dedicated to researchers.

The RGS and the Embassy of Kazakhstan in Russia expressed mutual interest in the development of bilateral relations between our states through humanitarian cooperation and agreed to maintain a dialogue on this issue.
