The participants of the circumnavigation expedition of the Tomsk Regional Branch of the Russian Geographical Society will hold a press conference on September 18, where they will tell about their future plans after the tragic loss of the catamaran in the Pacific Ocean. The meeting will take place in the format of a Moscow – Sydney teleconference.

The crew had to abandon the catamaran about halfway from Vanuatu to Australia, after the vessel was attacked by several cookiecutter sharks at once. The crew tried to eliminate the consequences of the attack until the end, but the danger of going down was growing by the minute. On the night of September 6, Evgeny Kovalevsky, Stanislav Berezkin, and Vincent Beaujeu sent a distress signal. They were picked up by a Panamanian RORO that happened to be nearby.

Evgeny Kovalevsky, Stanislav Berezkin, and Yulia Kalyuzhnaya, the head of the coastal staff of the circumnavigation, will tell reporters about the results of the Pacific stage of the expedition, the shark attack, how the rescue operation took place, and their future plans at the upcoming meeting. The TASS press center will be the venue for the teleconference.

Representatives of the mass media can take part in the event remotely. The broadcast of the press conference will be available on the TASS website on the announcement page, as well as in the VKontakte group.

On July 1, 2021, Siberian travelers Evgeny Kovalevsky and Stanislav Berezkin set off along the route of the first Russian round-the-world expeditions of the 19th century: Ivan Kruzenshtern’s (1803-1806), Yuri Lisyansky’s (1803-1806), Otto Kotzebue’s (1815-1818, 1823-1826), Vasily Golovnin’s (1817-1819), Fedor Litke’s (1826-1829), Faddey Bellingshausen and Mikhail Lazarev’s (1819-1921). The international project of the Tomsk Regional Branch of the Russian Geographical Society "Following the paths of Russian explorers" is dedicated to the 250th birthday anniversary of Krusenstern and the 200th anniversary of the discovery of Antarctica by Russian sailors. These events for a long time determined Russia's leadership in the development of the oceans and the discovery of new lands. You can learn more about the project and provide all possible assistance in its implementation on the website of the expedition.
