The 16th and 17th of February in Moscow historical homestead of Muraviev-Apostols took place ceremonies in honor of the visit of the world famous photographer Sebastio Salgado to Moscow and the opening of his exhibition «Genesis».
Sebastio Salgado – is one of the most famous documentary photographers in the world, who has entered the history of classic photo art and photojournalism. Together with Lelya Vanik Salgado he is the founder of the Amazonas Images agency in Paris. He is the member of prestigious agency Magnum Photo from 1979 to 1994. He is the owner of numerous awards for his contribution to the photo art, he has got the title of «The photographer of the year» of the ICP (International Center of Photography, New York) twice. He has been wearing a tittle of the Goodwill Ambassador of UNICEF since 2001, the honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and has been awarded with the Medal of the Royal Photographic Society.
The exhibition includes 245 gorgeous photos, selected from thousands of pictures, which had been shot during eight years of traveling through 32 countries of the world. Salgado began this project in 2004 and completed in 2011. For years of work he visited the Kalahari desert, jungle of Indonesia, Galapagos Islands, Madagascar, Alaska, Antarctica and other places. The significant part of the photos has been taken in Russia – on the Kamchatka Peninsula and Wrangel Island.

The day before the official opening of the exhibition, the 16th of February, the member of the Board of Trustees of the Russian Geographical Society Frederik Paulsen organized chamber reception in honor of Sebastio Salgado, the guests of which became friends and partners of the Russian Geographical Society.
The First Vice-President of the Russian Geographical Society Arthur Chilingarov gave Salgado an album with the works of the finalists of the photo contest «The most beautiful country», which was accepted by Sebastio with gratitude.
«The most beautiful country» - is the first photo contest of the Russian Geographical Society. It is aimed at wildlife conservation in Russia and education of caring attitude to the environment through the art of photography.
The contest started in June of 2015, and has become annual from the year of 2016. The main term of this large-scale media project – the photos must be shot only on the territory of our country.
More than 25 thousand people took part in the first photo contest, who sent about 200 thousand works for the first three months. Many experts note that it is unprecedented number for the project dedicated to the wild nature.
There are no restrictions on age and place of residence of the participants according to the rules of this creative contest. That is why the photos were coming from all over the world. To read more..
