Today, the 5th of December, there is celebrated the Volunteer`s Day around the world. The whole name of this feast is the International day of volunteers in the name of economic and social development. It was founded in 1985 on the initiative of the UN General Assembly. The main principle of the volunteer movement is to work, without asking for anything in return. The volunteers are giving their time, energy and talent for the good of the society. That is why they are worthy of their own holiday.
The events of the Russian Geographical Society can not do without the help of the volunteers. Thus, the volunteers helped to hold the All-Russian Congress of geography teachers, the All-Russian geographical dictation and the Award of the Russian Geographical Society. The volunteers are taking part in the expeditions of the Society as well.

The volunteer movement of the Russian Geographical Society brought together thousands of people across the country. There are schoolchildren, students and young specialists in the ranks of our volunteers.

The volunteering topic in modern Russia has been regarded at the last meeting of Intellectual Youth Club of the Russian Geographical Society as well. The participants of the event said about that fact that the volunteering is a spiritual impulse, desire to benefit the society. At the same time, many young people suggested that the volunteering is useful for the volunteer himself: as a person gains new acquaintances and experience, gathering data for scientific works, getting an opportunity to travel Russia and to participate in organization of interesting events.
