The representatives from the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research of India will take part in the new "Lesson from the Ocean", which will be held on April 3, at 11:00 Moscow time, as part of the project of the Tomsk Regional Branch of the Russian Geographical Society. An educational lesson for schoolchildren from different countries will be dedicated to Antarctica.

"Lessons from the Ocean" are held as part of the expedition "Following the paths of Russian explorers". Collaboration with scientists from India plays an important role in the preparation of materials for the next lesson. Yulia Kalyuzhnaya, Executive Director of the Tomsk Regional Branch of the Russian Geographical Society, presented the project to her Indian colleagues.

On February 20, Yulia Kalyuzhnaya met with Dr. Thamban Meloth, Director of the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research of India (NCPOR). The event was attended by the director of the Russian House in Mumbai, Elena Remizova.

The National Centre for Antarctic and Ocean Research is an Indian research institution located in the city of Vasco da Gama in Goa. Colleagues from India told the representative of the Russian Geographical Society about their work and introduced the infrastructure of the center.

Dr. Rahul Mohan spoke about the research activities and achievements of the center. Dr. Swati Nagar conducted a tour of the laboratories and shared information about the unusual exhibits that are located at the institution. The complex has a special low-temperature laboratory, a National Antarctic Data Center and a Polar Museum are being created.

“We work in different fields and perform all kinds of tasks. For example, we are coordinating and implementing the Indian Antarctic Program, including the maintenance of the permanent Indian polar station in Antarctica," Thamban Meloth said.

The participation in the project of the Russian Geographical Society was of interest to the leadership of the center, whose specialists have been holding meetings of schoolchildren with polar explorers for many years through videoconferences. Now the listeners of the “Lesson from the Ocean” will also learn about the research of the National Centre for Antarctic and Ocean Research of India.

“Millions of schoolchildren around the world are joining our project. They should not only study the geographical features of the continents, but also learn about organizations that take part in the research and development of modern geography,”  said Yulia Kalyuzhnaya.

Yulia Kalyuzhnaya expressed gratitude to her Indian colleagues for the warm welcome and presented gifts from Siberia to the participants of the meeting. Representatives of the National Centre for Antarctic and Ocean Research of India also prepared presents for the Tomsk Regional Branch of the Russian Geographical Society.

Active cooperation between Tomsk and India in the educational and research areas will continue.
