Subscribe to RSS - Media Grant Competition – 2022

The Russian Geographical Society began to accept applications for the media grants on February 17, 2022. You can apply until March 11, 2022, through the electronic system on the website . The RGS website contains detailed information about the competition and all the necessary documents.

Here you can find detailed information on who can get the media grants and how.

Who can apply for a media grant?

Any person or organization. Any media, NGO, sole proprietor, production company, etc. An individual can be either a citizen of Russia or a foreigner.

What is the amount of the RGS media grants?

The maximum amount of the media grant is 1.8 million rubles. The total budget of the campaign is 44 million rubles. There is no minimum grant amount — you can apply for any amount up to 1.8 million, the main thing is to justify it with the estimated expenditure.

A unique feature of the current grant campaign will be the maximum elimination of bureaucratic barriers to obtaining funds while maintaining strict financial discipline.

The selection will be done taking into account the new conditions for the provision of media grants. That means the quality of the applications and well-thought-out projects will be of greater importance.

Is it possible to apply for more than 1.8 million rubles?

No. The amount of one grant is limited to 1.8 million. At the same time, we urge you not to chase the maximum amount.

What kind of projects will the RGS support with the help of media grants?

The RGS is ready to consider applications for support of media projects of any subject, if they meet the goals and objectives of the Society’s activities. At the same time, there are topics that our experts will pay special attention to in 2022. Among them:

- projects related to the system of voluntary certification of tourist routes with the stamp "Recommended by the RGS". Russia is the largest country in the world, able to interest travelers of all tastes. The potential for the development of domestic tourism is most fully revealed under the current restrictions when crossing borders between states. The RGS can and should objectively assess the quality of tourist destinations.

We offer bloggers, journalists, production companies to go along our routes. It is important to collect all the information: evaluate the road, hotels, the quality of food, service, and the route itself. Take photos and videos, determine the genre and format that is interesting to the viewer, and post content on their platforms on the Internet. They, of course, have to mention that this is a joint project with the RGS;

- projects to conduct excursions to local attractions in various regions of Russia. As the RGS competition "The Best guide of Russia" has shown, there are already a huge number of unique, talented guides in the country, but there are still not enough of them. You can conduct five to seven video tours on selected routes, as well as in the region as a whole, and post them on your social media platforms with tags and a mention of the social media of the Russian Geographical Society.

At the same time, we decided to take a bold step, we are open to criticism. If suddenly, according to reviews and comments on the Internet, it turns out that the route collects a negative reaction from tourists, the RGS will remove the quality stamp that it gave to the route. Feedback is what we value the audience of social networks for. We are waiting for your applications for a travel show in any format;

- projects on the "favorite" topics of the Russian Geographical Society related to the already well-known "centers of attraction": the Konstantinovskaya Battery in Sevastopol; the historical building of the Headquarters in St. Petersburg; the route “The Golden Ring of the Bosporan Kingdom” in Krasnodar Krai, Rostov Oblast, on the territory of Crimea and Sevastopol; as well as others. "These topics are so deep that they deserve further study," said Dmitry Peskov, Chairman of the RGS Media Council;

- author's ideas in the genre in which you are used to working: these can be television programs, movies, a series of Internet commercials, podcasts, radio programs, and so on. The RGS will carefully evaluate the experience and the product already created by the applicant, carefully look at the portfolio, at whether your films, programs aired successfully, or at the rate of the increase in the number of subscribers on social networks;

- for the first time, the RGS plans to allocate part of the grant budget for the student quota: interesting ideas and formats among young and daring creative people who are now studying and mastering modern trends in the film and media industry. We give the opportunity to future cinematographers who have an audience on social networks to make videos, films and programs! Some universities have already responded; the interest was expressed by Film and Television School (GITR), Advanced Courses for Screenwriters and Directors (ACSD), the Moscow School of New Cinema (MSNC), the N.S Mikhalkov Academy of Film and Theatre, Alexander Mitta Film School, the S.A. Gerasimov All-Russian State Institute of Cinematography (VGIK), the Higher School of Economics (HSE).

What is unchangeable:

- the Russian Geographical Society most often does not finance, but co-finances. Preference is given to those projects for the implementation of which the authors are trying to attract funding from various sources (TV channels, regional authorities, other sponsors), without relying only on the RGS;

- a serious plus for any project is the pre-existing agreements on the provision of a television spot for the project at the time of submission of the grant application. Or an idea of a possible audience, if we are talking about a digital project.

What project formats will the RGS support with the help of media grants?

Over the past years, the RGS has mainly supported the creation of documentaries and TV programs. In 2022, we are betting on the genre diversity of projects and will pay special attention to:

- projects involving the creation of programs and documentaries lasting no more than 26 minutes in formats that "work" not only for television, but also for all possible platforms on the Internet;

- multimedia projects, including by the bloggers who already have their own audience of at least ten thousand people, that will be actively promoted on the Internet (on VKontakte, YouTube, Telegram, TikTok and other social networks);

- projects aimed at a young audience and its model of media consumption in general.

1. The Russian Geographical Society will welcome the applications on the topics close to the values of the Russian Geographical Society.

2. If you want to submit an application on a topic that we have not mentioned, be sure to submit, but two conditions must be taken into account. "First, it should be the subject area of the RGS. And secondly, it must show talent," Dmitry Peskov stressed, announcing the launch of the grant campaign.

3. Priority when considering applications will be given to modern information formats, youth-themed projects, and young authors.

We do NOT allocate grants for printed products. For this purpose, there are the Initiative grants (category "Publishing"). We do NOT allocate grants for the creation of websites.

The Russian Geographical Society has been awarding media grants since 2010. During this time, 274 projects have received support. The total amount of media grants issued is more than 500 million rubles. These funds have been used to produce and broadcast documentaries, popular science and feature films, TV series, animated series, multimedia projects (exhibitions and festivals), atlases, photo albums, travel guides and much more.
