46 schoolchildren from different cities of the Murmansk Region joined the "Getting to know our planet" specialized session at the Gandvig country camp in the Palkina Bay of the White Sea. For a week, the children were not only able to learn from each other about the different cities and towns of the Kola Arctic, they were also able to learn more about work of the Russian Geographical Society. All the activities they took part in were related to RGS projects. Due to the coronavirus restrictistions, the members of the Murmansk branch were unable to work with the students in person. Instead, they recorded their speeches on video for the kids to watch.
During the "Geography Night", the kids organized master classes for each other. Sure enough, the master class on tying knots turned out to be the most popular. It was organized by the students from the Murmansk Center of Children’s and Youth Tourism.
After studying the rules of participation in the "Conservation School of the Russian Geographical Society", the children studied the coast of the White Sea. On the day marking the end of the World War II, the RGS film club was organized, allowing the students to watch and discuss the "Polar Brotherhood" documentary. After getting acquainted with the RGS project called the "Expeditions", the students created checklists for expeditions. In the following days, they took part in the Geographical dictation, presented their vision of the "Geographer" professional standard and participated in the "intercontinental" sports contest.
The RGS photo contests were particularly interesting. The students took so many interesting pictures that they needed the opinion of their parents to determine which of the works was going to be presented at the All-Russian level. A whole day was devoted to studying the rules and stages of the intellectual Olympiad in geography. The students also tried their hand at the international Olympiad, completed tasks in the field. Kirill Voronin from Murmansk became the ultimate champion.
Murmansk Regional Branch of the RGS frequently organizes motor rallies. The young geographers decided to help the older ones and developed their own routes.
Youth Club of the Murmansk Regional Branch of the RGS organizes many cartographic trainings and intellectual events. The participants of the session drew a map of the camp, learned how to work with millimeter paper for drawing maps, worked with contour maps and took part in the "What? Where? When?" intellectual game.
At the end of the session, the participants received memorable gifts, diplomas for participation in competitions and certificates confirming they took part in the specialized session. Everything each kid created during the session provided material for their personal journal of a session participant. The most active students received special gifts from the RGS. The chocolate prize for active participation and high academic performance was shared bteween Andrey Ryabinin from Apatity and Maxim Melnik from Murmansk, and the third-grader Dmitry Nalivaiko and his sister Olga were rewarded for their passion for learning new things.
Similar sessions are expected to be organized in the school camps of Murmansk. This will allow a larger number of people to take part in the activities of the RGS.
