A historical and cultural event in honor of the 800th anniversary of Alexander Nevsky will take place in Monchegorsk

This year the whole country widely celebrates the 800th anniversary of the birth of the great Russian commander and statesman, Saint of the Russian Orthodox Church Alexander Yaroslavich, called Nevsky for the battle with foreign invaders on the Neva River. This glorious victory is just one of the great deeds of Nevsky. Not so many people know about the time Alexander Nevsky spent in the Kola North. During this period, the foundations of Russian statehood, modern borders, and good-neighborly relations with Norway and other Nordic countries were laid.

On the initiative of the Murmansk Regional Branch of the Russian Geographical Society, with the support of the Kola Mining and Metallurgical Company, a historical and cultural event “Alexander Nevsky and the Kola North" is going to be held.

The program of the event includeds a historical and cultural seminar“ "Nevsky on the Arctic frontiers: The role of Alexander Nevsky in the development of the Russian North”, a lecture on falconry and training of hunting birds, a trade popular in the Arctic since the time of Nevsky, and a speech by a professional ornithologist-falconer Vadim Avodnev ( St. Petersburg). The event will finish with a performance and a demonstration fight of historical reenactors, organized by the RGS member Alexey Ermakov from Kandalaksha.
