The II International Scientific and Practical Conference "Security of the Arctic frontiers: ecology, history, images of the future" has ended

The conference was attended by speakers from different cities of Russia and Norway, including representatives of the KSC RAS, MASU, Norwegian Pomor Academy, the Arctic University of Norway, a number of environmental organizations, MMBI RAS, the Norwegian research company “Akvaplan-niva", etc.

Due to the Decree of The Government of the Murmansk region of Russian Federation regulating measures against COVID-19 the conference was held in a mixed mode of both offline and online participation. Many experts participated in the conference usuing the Zoom platform. In addition, the conference was streamed on YouTube with simultaneous translation into Russian, Norwegian and English.

The conference was opened with welcome speeches by Vladimir Dyadik, First Deputy Chairman of the KSC RAS, and Denis Moiseev, Chairman of the Murmansk Regional Branch of the Russian Geographical Society, Deputy Director for Science of the MMBI RAS. After that, an RGS membership cards distribution ceremony took place.

The first section of the conference was devoted to the problems of sustainable development, dialogue and cooperation in the Arctic.

The work of the section began with the reports of the First Deputy Chairman of the KSC RAS Vladimir Dyadik and the analyst of the Scientific and Organizational Department of the KSC RAS Grigory Ilyin. In their reports, they spoke about the activities of the Kola Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences and emphasized its huge role for the development of science in the Arctic. KSC RAS is currently the only federal scientific center in Russia located beyond the Arctic Circle.

The head of the Norwegian company Arctic Development AS Arild Vollan spoke about conflicts and ways to resolve them, the search for consensus in the name of future peace and stability. Russian Chairmanship Youth Envoy for International Cooperation in the Arctic Mikhail Uksusov and St. Petersburg State University postgraduate student Ekaterina Serova gave their expert's commentary on his report.

Vladimir Latka's report on the importance of importance of whale protection for the Arctic marine ecosystems aroused great interest. Denis Moiseev, representative of the Norwegian research company Akvaplan-niva Alexey Bambulyak, as well as the head of the Norwegian Pomor Academy Remi Strand gave their expert's commentary on his report afterwards.

In her report Olga Bodrova, Public Relations Leading Specialist at the KSC RAS, highlighted the topical issues of the history and culture of the Kola Sami in the research of the KSC RAS's Center for Humanitarian Problems of the Barents Region.

2021 marks the 80th anniversary of the first Arctic Convoy “Dervish” arrival in Russia. In their reports Norwegian historians Steinar Borch Jensen and Arnt Bjarne Aronsen, Head of the K-21 Museum Yuri Voloshchenko, Head of the Norwegian Pomor Academy Remi Strand emphasized how important it was for the victory over Nazi Germany.
