The III International Scientific and Practical Conference “Security of Arctic Frontiers: ecology, history, images of the future” took place in Murmansk

On October 27, the III International Scientific and Practical Conference “Security of Arctic Frontiers: ecology, history, images of the Future” started at Murmansk State Technical University. The Murmansk Regional Branch of the Russian Geographical Society coordinated the event The Murmansk State Technical University, Murmansk Marine Biological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Northern Character Production Center were the co-organizers of the conference.  This conference was held for the first time in October 2020 in Murmansk and aroused great interest among Russian and foreign participants. The second conference was held last year in the Kola Science Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Apatity. The conferences was attended by speakers from Russia, Norway, Finland and other Arctic countries.

This year, the conference was dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the Murmansk Regional Branch of the Russian Geographical Society.

The conference on October 27 was attended by speakers from Russia, Norway, Finland, China and Belarus, including representatives of the KSC RAS, MASU, the Transnational Foundation for Peace and Future Research, Wuhan University, a number of environmental and public organizations, etc. The conference included 2 sections: “The Arctic – a region of sustainable development, dialogue and cooperation” and “Topical issues of the history of the Arctic”.

The first section addressed the following issues: science and environmental protection in the Arctic; Russia and Norway in a changing world; peace, stability and sustainable international development.  The main topics of the second section were: history of the discovery and development of the Arctic, issues of preserving the historical memory of the victory over fascism during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945.

One of the significant events of the conference supported by the Presidential Grant Foundation was the discussion "Russia and Norway in a changing world" on the most pressing issues of today's information agenda.

The event was held in a mixed mode of both offline and online participation. It was broadcasted online and the recordings were posted on the official YouTube channel of the MRB RGS.

On October 28, MSTU hosted screenings of films about the history of the Great Patriotic War and the exploration of the Arctic.
