Vladimir Denisov graduated from the Leningrad Hydrometeorological Institute in 1971. He started his career in 1972 in the Murmansk branch of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute. He had worked at the Murmansk Marine Biological Institute since 1992, having worked his way up from a leading researcher to Deputy Director of the Institute for Scientific Work (1993- 2008), since 2008 he was a Chief researcher. He conducted extensive research in the field of oceanology, marine geography and environmental management. His works were devoted to the study of the oceanological regime of the Arctic shelf seas, development and implementation of scientific and methodological approaches to taking into account the characteristics of the marine environment in the design of promising ice navigation vessels, as well as the assessment of the environmental impact of offshore oil and gas developments. He proposed and developed the basics of the ecological geography of the sea as a methodology for modern analysis, forecasting and management of natural and economic marine complexes based on the principles of sustainable development. For half a century of scientific activity, Vladimir Vasilyevich has published more than 150 scientific papers in domestic and foreign publications, including the fundamental monograph "Ecological and geographical foundations of sustainable nature management in the shelf seas (ecological geography of the sea)". Under his leadership, major expeditionary and scientific programs have been developed and implemented - the BAREX project, the Russian-Norwegian Oceanographic project, federal projects on coastal zone management and marine EIA methodology.
Vladimir Vasilyevich was a member of the Presidium of the KSC RAS (2001-2008). He devoted a lot of attention and energy to the upbringing and education of young people, conducted teaching work as a professor, head of the Department of Geoecology and Geography of the MSPU (currently MASU). He was a permanent member of the MMBI Dissertation Council 24.1.170.01 (previously D.002.140.01).
Vladimir Vasilyevich had been a member of the Russian Geographical Society since 1975, and a member of the MRB RGS Council since 2015. For his scientific and teaching work, he was awarded the medal "300 years of the Russian Navy", as well as diplomas, awards and commendations from the Russian Academy of Sciences and other institutions.
Thanks to his extensive, versatile knowledge and his benevolence, Vladimir Denisov gained high scientific authority and deep respect not only from the Institute's staff, but also from other scientific organizations and educational institutions associated with the MMBI.
Vladimir Denisov will always be remembered by us as a very intelligent, erudite, self-sufficient, delicate and kind person. He was a true gentleman. His memory will live in the hearts of colleagues and in his numerous scientific works. We express our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Vladimir Denisov.
