MRB RGS representative spoke about space weather

On February 2, a popular science event was held on board the nuclear icebreaker Lenin. Vladimir Belakhovsky, a member of the Russian Geographical Society from the Murmansk Region, Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, senior researcher at the Polar Geophysical Institute from Apatity, delivered a lecture on space weather.

He spoke about its variations which can be monitored from Earth. He noted that in 2023 we are moving towards the maximum of the 11-year cycle of solar activity. In the coming years there will be more geomagnetic activity meaning we'll witness more magnetic storms and more auroras.

After the lecture, the guests played an intellectual team game.

The lecture was organized by the Atomic Energy Information Center on board the nuclear icebreaker Lenin. Similar popular science events are now held here every Thursday. The next meeting will be dedicated to Russian science, as well as women in science.
