Murmansk Regional Branch of the Russian Geographical Society presented an exhibition at the Safe Arctic — 2023 exercise

Safe Arctic — 2023 is a large-scale exercise on the implementation of measures to protect the territories of the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation from emergency situations. On behalf of the President of the Russian Federation and under the leadership of the Minister of Emergency Situations of Russia, these exercises are held in nine Arctic regions of the country.

At the exhibition organized for the participants and guests of the event, members of the Murmansk Regional Branch of the Russian Geographical Society presented a whole set of various exhibits – from an alpenstock that once belonged to the polar explorer Fridtjof Nansen, to a collection of materials of the scientific and practical conferences organized by the Branch. The exhibition was called “Comprehensive Research of the Russian Geographical Society, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation and the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia in the Arctic.”

Sergey Goncharov, a member of the Council of the MRB RGS, told the participants about the exhibits in detail. Among them were the globe of the Kola Peninsula, the skull of a polar bear, found during the Complex Expedition of the RGS and the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation to the Yuzhny island of the Novaya Zemlya archipelago, a walrus skull, a wooden hammer, an alpenstock of polar explorer Fridtjof Nansen, and the recently won national prize Crystal Compass.

In addition, everyone could get acquainted with the publications of the Russian Geographical Society – the book “On Franz Josef Land. Based on the materials of the historical expedition of 1985”, “Red Wings over the Arctic”, collections of materials of the scientific and practical conference Security of Arctic frontiers: ecology, history, images of the future and others.

To participate in the interdepartmental experimental research exercise, a grouping of forces and means of the Russian Emergency Service, exceeding 3.5 thousand specialists and 650 pieces of equipment, was involved. More than 1,000 people and 167 pieces of equipment took part in the exercises in the Murmansk region. The Minister of Emergency Situations Alexander Kurenkov, who attended the opening ceremony of the exercises in Murmansk together with the governor of the region Andrey Chibis, personally launched the exercises in all nine regions, addressing the participants via video conference.

“It is planned to work out two tasks with the solution of 23 experimental research objectives. More than a thousand personnel and 167 pieces of equipment will take part in the practical part of the exercises,” said Ruslan Nazarov, head of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia in the Murmansk Region, Major General of the Internal Service, before the start of the exercise.

The Murmansk Region is the only region visited by over forty representatives of foreign delegations from 13 countries, the press service of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the region reports. Among them are Serbia, Laos, Saudi Arabia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uganda, Mozambique. Foreign guests observered the practical part of the exercise, and will also take part in scientific events dedicated to topical issues of security of the Arctic zone.

After the opening ceremony, rescuers worked out actions to eliminate a fire on the helipad of a nuclear icebreaker, which subsequently led to a radiation accident.

In accordance with the task, during the work on the helipad of the nuclear icebreaker, a tank with diesel fuel was damaged, followed by a spill on the deck and a fire. The fire is spreading rapidly across the helipad. There is a threat of its spread beyond its borders.

“Based on the results of this work, we will be able to objectively assess the readiness of forces and means to act in conditions of extreme climate and inaccessible terrain and more effectively build further work in the interests of ensuring the security of the Arctic,” Alexander Kurenkov said.

“Our rescuers and firefighters are ready for any challenge. Even to a radiation accident on a nuclear icebreaker. The grouping of forces and means of the Murmansk region worked efficiently and smoothly. Alexander Kurenkov particularly appreciated the work of aviation,” Andrei Chibis wrote in his Telegram channel.
