The first event took place in Mishukovo, the village of hydrographers of the Northern Fleet, near the memorial installed here eight years ago. Crews of hydrographic vessels of the Northern Fleet and boats, the administration and residents of Mezhdurechye, Olenegorsk rescuers and members of the military historical reconstruction club from Murmansk honored the memory of the crew and passengers of the "Meridian" hydrographic vessel that sank in the Barents Sea on July 24, 1941.
After the event, a capsule with sea water collected at the place where Meridian sank, as well as flowers and wreaths were laid at the monument. The right to lay the capsule was granted to Raisa Rostovtseva, the daughter of one of the survivors of the events.
Last year, a handful of earth was taken from the memorial and thrown into the sea where Meridian rests. As part of the Complex Expedition of the Northern Fleet and the Russian Geographical Society “Remember the War”, on the Day of Remembrance and Sorrow, the hydrographic vessel “Romuald Muklevich” went out to the Barents sea to lay wreaths at the place where submarine K-2 rests.
In addition, the radiation and chemical reconnaissance vessel KRH-536 went to the place where the patrol boat "Tuman" sank in an unequal battle with three German destroyers (Z-4 “Richard Beitzen", Z-10 “Hans Lodi” and Z-16 “Friedrich Ekoldt”) on August 10, 1941 near the entrance to the Kola Bay.
The ceremony of laying wreaths on the water was attended by military personnel of the Northern Fleet, Young Army cadets and representatives of the Murmansk Regional Branch of the Russian Geographical Society: Denis Moiseev and Vitaly Novikov.
The Murmansk Regional RGS Branch expresses its gratitude to the leadership of the Hydrographic Service and the Kola Flotilla of the heterogeneous forces of the Northern Fleet for organizing the events and the opportunity to take personal part in them.
