The independent non-commercial organization Production Center "Northern Character" is one of the most important partners of the MRB RGS. Head of the Production Center and President of the Northern Character Film Festival Svetlana Soldatova is a member of the Murmansk Regional Branch of the Russian Geographical Society.

The opening ceremony of the XIII International Film Festival "Northern Character" took place simultaneously in both Murmansk and Tromsø. Due to the COVID restrictions, the opening ceremony was held in a mixed mode – the two countries were connected by a teleconference. Film directors, journalists, producers, jury members and public figures gathered in the Congress Hotel Meridian in Murmansk and in Verdensteatret in Tromsø . The opening ceremony was attended by a member of the Council of the Murmansk Regional Branch of the Russian Geographical Society, adviser to the Governor of the region Sergey Goncharov.

In the evening, a screening of the opening film took place at the "Murmansk" cinema. The audience watched the film “Compartment No. 6” by Finnish director Juho Kuosmanen. The chairman of the Murmansk Regional Branch of the Russian Geographical Society Denis Moiseev attended the screening.

"Northern Character" is the first Russian film festival “Compartment No. 6" participates in. The film follows the journey of a Finnish student and a Russian miner from Moscow to Murmansk. The main roles in the film were played by Sadie Haarla, Yuri Borisov, Dinara Drukarova and Julia Aug. A significant part of the "Compartment No. 6" was filmed in the Murmansk region. Finland submitted the film to the Best International Feature Film category of the 94th Academy Awards.

This May, the Murmansk regional branch of the RGS together with the Production Center “Northern Character" and the Partisan Museum in Kiberg organized screenings of Russian war films in cultural institutions of the Murmansk region and Norway.

The festival "Northern Character" was included in the plan of Russia's chairmanship in the Arctic Council. In Murmansk, the festival began on Monday and will last all week. We audience will be able to watch 89 films at various venues of the city – the Meridian Congress Hotel, the Kirov Palace of Culture, Murmansk Regional Art Museum, the Murmansk Regional Scientific Library, the "Murmansk" Cinema, the Spolokhi street cinema, the MASU's street cinema. Anastasia Yagodina, project manager of the Murmansk Regional Branch of the Russian Geographical Society, takes part in the dubbing of films in the Kirov Palace of Culture.
