Pasvik is an international nature reserve and a part of the Pasvik-Inari Trilateral Park. It is the youngest nature reserve in the region.
Natalia Polikarpova, the Director of the Reserve, a member of the RGS from the Murmansk Region, as well as Yulia Krokhinova and Polina Nosal, employees of the Reserve, were the speakers of the event. Representatives of the Murmansk Regional Branch of the Russian Geographical Society attended the event as audience members.
The event opened with a welcome speech by Alexander Eliseev, Chairman of the Murmansk Region Tourism Committee. He noted the uniqueness of Pasvik as a tourist destination of the Murmansk region.
“Pasvik, with all its natural beauty, is a magnet for all of us. We live in a unique, amazing place, but rarely notice the beauty of nature. While visiting nature reserves we not only look at it, they also help to understand and truly feel this beauty, to be proud of the place where we live,” Alexander Eliseev said.
Natalia Polikarpova presented the book “Polar Paradise: Thirty-three Years of the Pasvik Nature Reserve“. It was written by a friend of the reserve, historian, biologist and writer Alexandra Goryashko.
Alexandra described the work on the book as a “crazy project”. She had less than a year to write it and had to do most of the work and interviews remotely.
The participants of the event saw recordings of interviews with Alexandra Goryashko, Anna Mikhailova who illustrated the book, as well as with Steinar Vikan, the person who created Pasvik, and some other foreign colleagues.
Pasvik specialists Yulia Krokhinova and Polina Nosal spoke about the tourist routes of the Pasvik Nature Reserve and its surroundings, about how to get there, about Pasvik's activities in the field of environmental education and the development of cognitive ecological tourism in specially protected natural areas.
The audience was particalary interested in Pasvik's ecological routes and their landmarks.
